Hello Teachers ~ (and everyone else who loves children!). As the lazy days of summer quickly pass by, our thoughts start to turn to the beginning of a new school year! Teachers are reviewing lesson plans, formulating welcome letters, and planning field trips for the upcoming school year. The stores begin to fill with school clothes, backpacks, and all kinds of school supplies.

As I begin to prepare for the fall, I thought I would share with you some of the things that are included in my welcome packets. Perhaps they will be helpful, or may trigger some new ideas that you would like to implement in the coming year.

Parent Donation Tips

It is sometimes difficult to ask for donations from the families of our students, especially in these trying economic times. I have found that many parents sincerely wish to help. They may be aware of how much we, as teachers, purchase with our own money – due to budget cuts and shrinking funding. Here are just a few suggestions.

1. Include in your welcome letter requests for much needed supplies.
For example: Families beginning with the letters A-G bring in paper towels H-M glue sticks N-S masking tape O-Z box of tissues.

2. A giving tree is something that can be used throughout the year.
You can print items that are needed on an apple and place them on a tree or a bulletin board. You can list anything from paper clips to clear contact paper. This can be a more subtle way of requesting help. Those who are able to give tend to give generously; and for those who may find it more difficult to give, do not feel pressured. It has worked very well for us in previous years!
